Why do I need blogs in 2023?

In a world where video is the epicentre, I look at why blogs are still relevant in supporting your business and generating customer interest.

It’s no secret that blogs have had their hey-day. I started my own blog in 2015, whilst I was studying Literature at uni. I had decided I wanted to be a fashion journalist and the best way to get my work out there was through a blog. My plan was simple; promote it through social media and grab that journalism job, with British Vogue, by the horns.

Of course, this is not what happened. I did write for some magazines and won a competition writing for London Fashion Week, but apparently writing for Vogue wasn’t as easy as I had planned in my head… who knew? I was so naïve.

As a graduate, I kept on writing – many different styles, many different publications but never quite getting that breakthrough. So, I carried on adding to my blog – I managed to grab a couple of brand deals from the blog, but steadily work took over and my blog was abandoned. One post a year, tops.

Fast-forward to 2023 and blogs aren’t as popular as they were in 2015. However, they still make good reading for potential clients/customers. They are imperative to your website and great for demonstrating your knowledge and your expertise.

This is where the blog is at present; a great resource for others to engage with and to use. They are also wonderful for repurposing content. We all know how important video is on social media, so it might be you write a blog and accompany it with a video explaining it in greater detail.

This can then be used as a podcast, soundbite or social media post. When promoting it, link it back to the original blog post, this then improves the traffic to your website… they may then come across your ‘services’ page – ah, mission accomplished!

LinkedIn also allows you to post blogs directly onto the site using their articles feature. Upload your original piece, then link back to your website, easy! The great thing about uploading directly on to LinkedIn is you will incite conversations with your connections, discuss various points and the article with then be shown to more people.

So, blogs may have had their peak in the 2010s, but they are far more valuable than you may first think.
